Pain management, as the name states, manages pain with various modalities. These modalities include lifestyle changes, physical therapy or exercise, ultrasound, massage, muscle stimulation, medications, and interventional procedures using injection techniques. For best results, these modalities are usually used in combination.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Pain Management

Physical medicine & rehabilitation, also called physiatry, is a field that was developed in the 1940s during WWII secondary to the overwhelming need to rehabilitate soldiers coming back from the war.

Physiatry involves the study of the various musculoskeletal disorders and exercise physiology. Physiatrists are trained in orthopaedics, neurology, spinal cord injuries, physical therapy, and pain syndromes. Physiatrists can also continue on with
subspecialty training in numerous fields including pain management, brain injury, and spinal cord injury.
