Physical medicine & rehabilitation, also called
physiatry, is a field that was developed in the 1940s
during WWII secondary to the overwhelming need to
rehabilitate soldiers coming back from the war.   
Physiatry involves the study of the various
musculoskeletal disorders and exercise physiology.  
Physiatrists are trained in orthopaedics, neurology,
spinal cord injuries, physical therapy, and pain
syndromes. Physiatrists can also continue on with
subspecialty training in numerous fields including pain
management, brain injury, and spinal cord injury.
Pain management, as the name states, manages pain
with various modalities.  These modalities include
lifestyle changes, physical therapy or exercise,
ultrasound, massage, muscle stimulation, medications,
and interventional procedures using injection
techniques. For best results, these modalities are
usually used in combination
